Process cartography – collect, organize, visualize

The Process Cartography project is a Web platform that provides an interactive research tool to support the design process at the interface between teachers and students. The platform will create a knowledge base for landscape architecture and design-relevant tools. Its content will be linked intelligently, collected individually, amended, and reused in analogue.
The project
Landscape architecture has become increasingly important with the advance of urbanisation. Architecture students increasingly need more landscape architectural expertise for their designs and interdisciplinary cooperation. The project responds to this fact and develops a web platform that provides quick access to design-relevant knowledge for architecture students. The web platform deals with questions of design, based on landscape architectural types, topics and methods. Moreover, tools and their use are presented in various disciplines, in order to promote a variety of media and techniques in design. The content is presented in the form of annotated images, film clips and texts. Thanks to the navigation and linking system, the content can be concretely searched but also browsed through at random. The functions make it possible to collect objects from the database, to arrange or amend them according to certain parameters, and to continue to use them in printed form. The project, supported by Innovedum, is a research tool that can be used individually or as part of the teaching. The knowledge it imparts should sharpen one’s understanding of landscape and help fo<rm a consistent terminology. In addition, the platform is designed to encourage exchange between digital and analogue formats and activities. In particular, students should be encouraged to use the tools in a variety of ways and to create their own worlds of references.
Implementation into teaching practice
The Wunderkammer and its functions as well as tips for handling were presented in lectures at the beginning of the semester in various teaching formats of the Bachelor's and Master's degree programme in Architecture. Additional content that was requested during meetings with students was regularly created and added by assistants of the Chair of Prof Günther Vogt. In addition, the use of google analytics periodically evaluated which content was viewed most frequently. This helped to identify the subject areas in which the Wunderkammer is particularly successful, resp. for which it makes sense to create more content.
Lessons learned and further impacts
The Wunderkammer can be attested a notable success in terms of helping with specific questions concerning landscape architecture issues. On the one hand, this is confirmed by the relatively high number of views of certain content, but it is also reflected, for example, in the obligatory project meetings of students. It often happened that students referred to the content of the Wunderkammer or had them printed out with them. Another indication of this success is the declining demand for extraordinary project meetings from students, especially from those who are working on design projects with other Professors/Chairs. This function also appears to be scalable to large numbers of students. In addition to helping with specific questions, the function of inspiration (through “browsing through at random”) is difficult to measure. From today's perspective two aspects of the project appear to be not ideal: The high demand on the quality of the content led to internal rounds of corrections, which meant a lot of work and always led to a certain amount of time creating the content. Rapid reactions to desired content were therefore difficult to achieve. For different economic reasons, various existing software and server systems were used to create the Wunderkammer. The resulting numerous dependencies were ultimately decisive for the fact that the operation of the platform was discontinued.
